Vancourt was inducted into the “Righteous Among the Nations” because, in 1942, with the help of his cousin, Raymonde Lombard, he sheltered many young Jews in his home in Lille, France. Religious convictions led Vancourt and Lombard to rescue multiple Jews, even though they knew it could cost them their lives if they had been caught. In 1975, one of the young ladies Vancourt and Lombard rescued, Irene Kahn Poll, documented the mens' heroic activities for the Israeli government, which led to their induction.
