Aristides de Sousa Mendes
Mendes was Portugal's consul-general in Bordeaux, France. After the capture of France in 1940, the Portuguese government prohibited visas, especially to Jews. Mendes disobeyed the government's explicit instructions; he issued a total of 1575 visas. His actions led to his dismissal hence he was unable to support his family of 13 children. He died penniless in 1954.
