Irena Sendler
Irena Sendler, a very courageous woman during the Holocaust, was the Senior Administrator of the Warsaw Social Welfare Department, meaning she helped make sure orphaned children and the elderly received food and financial aid. Naturally, when she heard of the horrific happenings the Nazis were perpetrating, she was furious. Unlike many others, she decided to make a statement. Between 1942 and 1943, Irena smuggled 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto into temporary hiding places, later finding non-Jewish families to adopt them.
