Jan Karski
Once a cavalry soldier, in 1939, Jan Karski turned clandestine diplomat for the Polish underground. Jan proved his loyalty in 1940 when was was captured and tortured in Slovakia; in fear of revealing the secrets of the underground, he slit his wrists and was taken to a hospital where fellow underground friends aided him in his escape. In July 1942, Jan took part in a secret mission. This mission entailed getting information about the Nazis from Poland and relaying this information to London and Washington. Before Jan left for this mission he was told about “Hitler’s war against the Polish Jews” by two leaders of the Jewish Underground. He was to carry this information to Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt. He slipped into the Warsaw Ghetto twice in order to see what happened to the Jews and to explain the horrors of what was happening. He wanted the world to know the truth about the Jews’ sufferings in Europe.
